Book review "With Head, Heart and Hands, Make a Medical Professional" by Professor Abdul Jabbar Mehdi Salih

Harald Rosen

Department of Surgery, Vienna Medical School, Vienna, Austria

Surgery is a near unique environment of learning and practice. Therefore, all surgical, as well as medical, teachers should be generalists with skills and knowledge in all aspects of their field.

Although defining characteristics of ‘surgical’ specialties is still focusing on the performance of invasive procedures (alongside the large number of diagnostic issues and other elements of pre- and postoperative care), other special characteristics of this field have been barely addressed from an educational perspective.

However, these unique features of the development of young surgeons will make a difference in their future career. This book seeks to elucidate surgical education and training from a number of other dimensions compared with previous textbooks dealing with medical education.

The author, Professor Abdul Jabbar Mehdi Salih, has been practising as a general surgeon for decades in the public and private setting, but also is teacher and examiner for surgery at Dubai Medical College (Dubai, United Arab Emirates). Based on his long-lasting experience, this textbook deals with the widely accepted standards of medical training alongside other important issues such as behaviour, teamwork and use of common sense (probably one of the most important characteristics of a successful clinician).

With Head, Heart and Hands, Make a Medical Professional covers the most important aspects in the development of a young clinician and can be strongly recommended for every teacher in medicine and surgery.
