Because of the unexplained success of limited midline myelotomies in relieving pelvic cancer pain and in reducing the need for strong analgesic drugs in human patients, Willis and colleagues conducted experimental investigations that demonstrated in rats and monkeys the presence of a novel visceral pain pathway in the posterior funiculus of the spinal cord. Clinicians at their institution and in Germany, Korea, and Taiwan have confirmed the effectiveness of interrupting this pathway in patients with visceral pain.
