Abstract

Introduction: Osteoporosis is a major public health problem. There is evidence suggesting that a lack of knowledge is one contributor to osteoporosis. Low literacy rates, lack of awareness regarding disease consequences and risk factors ultimately result in increased incidence of this disease.

Objectives: To assess osteoporosis knowledge, attitude and practice among adult women (18 years and over) in Majmaah City.

Materials and methods: Data were collected from 390 females in popular public places of Majmaah City based on a convenience sampling technique. Participants were asked to fill in a structured, precoded and pretested questionnaire, which consisted of three domains to assess their knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) of osteoporosis.

Results: The findings showed that women had fair to good levels of knowledge (50%), attitude (55%) and practice (60%) about osteoporosis. Media was the main source for information about osteoporosis identified by the women (57.69%). Significant differences were observed between age and knowledge, attitude and practice of osteoporosis (P =0.004), in which the younger population had a higher level of knowledge and attitude but the middle-aged population had better preventative practice. Participants were sometimes exposing themselves to sunlight (37.4%) and taking vitamins and calcium-rich food (50.8%) but rarely performing physical activity (35.4%).

Conclusions: Women had fair to good KAP levels regarding osteoporosis. Participants showed a positive attitude towards osteoporosis in terms of reading materials and how to protect themselves against this disease.
