Introduction: The use of the oral contraceptive pill (OCP) is very popular worldwide. However, the public’ s knowledge towards it still remains unclear, especially in the developing world.

Objectives: To evaluate the knowledge, attitude and practice of Saudi women towards the use of the OCP and other methods of contraception.

Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study on 713 women was conducted using a questionnaire for data collection. One-way analysis of variance and t -test were used to establish the demographical relationship with these domains. Chi-squared test was used to establish the relationship between two categorical variables. The level of significance was set at P -value <0.05. Data were analysed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 22 (IBM Corporation, Armonk, NY, USA).

Results: The majority of the participants were Saudis (23.8%), between 27 and 37 years old (34.8%), married (89.5%) with college education (42.6%) and earning between 3000 and 10000 Saudi Riyals per month (22.0%). As age increased positive attitude towards the OCP also increased (P <0.001). The higher the education attained by the subjects, the higher their level of knowledge towards the OCP. Compared with marital status, only attitude also had a significant relationship with the OCP (P <0.001).

Conclusions: Awareness and education is recommended to overcome the misconception towards the use of the OCP. Future studies that include more regions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia would be more representative and would provide in-depth understanding of this topic.
