Professor Frederick Fenech, MOM, MD, FRCP, FACP, KM
Professor Fenech was born in Malta in 1934. He studied at St. Aloysius College and the University of Malta, qualifying MD (Malta) in 1955. He carried postgraduate work in the UK, obtaining the MRCP in 1962. On returning to Malta, he was appointed Consultant Physician at St. Luke’s Teaching Hospital and in 1973 he was appointed Professor and Chairman of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and in the Health Service. He is Fellow of all the UK Colleges of Physicians and of the American College. In 1978, he was appointed Foundation Professor of Medicine in the new Medical College of Kuwait University, returning to his Alma Mater in 1987 as Dean and Professor of Medicine. Over the years, he published over 70 scientific articles in internationally refereed journals and over the years he has served as external examiner in a number of overseas Medical Schools. In 2001, he was appointed by the Secretary General of the UN as Director of the UN International Institute on Ageing based in Malta which he served till 2009. In 1991, he founded the Malta Red Cross Society and was its President till 2010. In 1992, he was made Member of the National Order of Merit for his services to Medicine. He is a Knight of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta as well as a Knight of the Spanish Order of Isabella La Cattolica. Professor Fenech is married to Maryrose Galea and has a daughter Josanne who is Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist in Manchester, UK. and a son Thomas, who is Chairman of Ophthalmology in the Maltese Health Service and in the Medical School.
